Homer City Redevelopment (HCR) and Kiewit Power Constructors Co. are teaming up to transform what was once the largest coal-burning plant in Pennsylvania. The more than $10 billion initiative would turn the Pittsburgh site into the biggest artificial intelligence data center powered by natural gas in the nation.

The site, formerly known as the Homer City Generating Station, will cover more than 3,200 acres. The natural gas will come from the Marcellus Shale region.

Some perks of the project include 4.5 gigawatts to power AI data centers (which is forecasted to trim greenhouse gas emissions by up to 65 percent per megawatt hour), serving multiple customers with data centers, and powering thousands of homes. Also, the transformation is expected to create 1,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs, with another 10,000 employment opportunities during the construction phase. Moreover, Homer and Kiewit expect to "inject billions more" in addition to the at least $10 billion investment in the data center development.

“This project will honor Homer City’s place in the proud history of Pennsylvania energy generation, while accelerating the state and local community’s ability to meet the needs of a rapidly shifting energy landscape," William Wexler, president and CEO of HCR, said in a statement.

"Alongside our best-in-class partners, we have been working tirelessly to ensure that Homer City’s transformation can happen as quickly and seamlessly as possible. Further, we are fully committed to maximizing the unprecedented level of economic opportunity this project represents not just for Indiana County, but for all of Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region of the country.”

The transformation development comes as Pittsburgh has seen multiple recent major manufacturing investments. For example, in March, Mitsubishi Electric Power Products started the construction of its switchgear factory in the city. And during the fall of 2024, Mainspring Energy made a $175 million investment in a 300,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in the region.

Groundbreaking of Homer and Kiewit's development is expected in 2025, with power production set to start by 2027.
