Nichols, a founder of the ULI, was instrumental in building muchof Kansas City's residential neighborhoods and was the drivingforce behind the creation of the Country Club Plaza in the 1920s,thought to be the nation's oldest outdoor shopping district, whichis located in the heart of town.

Riley was cited for his role in revitalizing the Charlestondowntown district, a waterfront park and for encouraging the growthof the Spoleto Festival USA, an annual arts festival. He willreceive the award in Kansas City this October.
