KANSAS CITY, MO—The first winner of the J.C. Nichols Prize is Joseph P. Riley Jr., mayor of Charleston, SC, for the past 15 years. The $100,000 prize, given by the Urban Land Institute, was established earlier this year to recognize a person or institution that has displayed extraordinary leadership in urban land community development.

Nichols, a founder of the ULI, was instrumental in building much of Kansas City’s residential neighborhoods and was the driving force behind the creation of the Country Club Plaza in the 1920s, thought to be the nation’s oldest outdoor shopping district, which is located in the heart of town.

Riley was cited for his role in revitalizing the Charleston downtown district, a waterfront park and for encouraging the growth of the Spoleto Festival USA, an annual arts festival. He will receive the award in Kansas City this October.
