The 50-year-old, 100-acre Ben White Raceway, abandoned by the silks-and-sulky crowd years ago, is receiving new attention from five potential suitors. None has the funding to actually buy the eastern portion of the track outright. But all the bidders are seeking a rental deal to use the property for either recreational or equestrian themes.

The U.S. 441 North and Lee Road asset in northwest Orlando is conservatively valued at about $5 million or $50,000 per acre, commercial appraisers tell GlobeSt.com. A review committee is preparing a short list of finalists for city council study in September.

The bidders are the YMCA, Edgewater High School, Freedom Ride of Winter Park, Canon Equine Inc. of Heathrow and Heidi Erickson, an alternate on the U.S. Olympic dressage team in 1998.

The city is reserving the western half of the track for green space and sports activities.
