Governor George Pataki spent the other day visiting the area and handing out economic development dollars, while HUD Secretary and potential future New York gubernatorial rival Andrew Cuomo was doing the same thing only a few miles away. Pataki awarded $5.6 million in Community Block Grants Small Cities funds to 12 Hudson Valley communities. The governor, along with a host of GOP local, state and federal lawmakers, were on hand for the announcement in Highland Falls on Aug. 7. At the same time, Cuomo visited three cities in the region and, flanked by Democratic lawmakers, awarded $19.4 million in Federal funds to Hudson Valley municipalities.

Until recently, such grants were under the direction of HUD, but late last year Federal legislation brought the program under state control. In all, more than $50 million was distributed to 111 municipalities across the state.

The funding allocations include a $349,242 sewer upgrade in Highland Falls, as well as infrastructure and economic development-related grants geared to manufacturing and business expansion in communities located in Orange, Ulster and Sullivan counties.
