The town of Cornelius (Pop. 9,000), just north of Charlotte, has chosen custom home builder David Simonini to develop its 128-acre Town Center plan. Simonini beat out 50 other developers for the job. This is his first mixed-use venture.

The project is expected to take at least five years to complete. The master plan combines houses, apartments, offices, shops and a mass-transit stop.

The town has a contract to purchase the land for about $5.6 million. It expects to sign its interest over to Simonini, who would buy the land at the same price.
