For the last quarter-century, the northern Silicon Valley cityhas stayed faithful to strict commercial-signage regulationsprohibiting corporate logos more than one story high. And they'renot changing their minds now, even in the face of a screaming neweconomy.

The city council last week rejected a measure to revivediscussion of the signage law. So for now, commuters over theHayward-San Mateo Bridge may not recognize the U.S. headquarters ofsoftware company Inktomi Corp., since it has no sign visible fromthe roadway.

Local business leaders, including officials at high-profiledeveloper Spieker Properties, want to reopen the dialogue todiscuss possible signage compromises. Those include allowingcommercial buildings to display corporate logos above entryways andpermitting larger signs in front of buildings.
