MacFrugal's Discount Store to Open in Hayward

HAYWARD, CA -- Bargain hunters will soon have a new destination, with a MacFrugal's discount store projected to open here this fall.

The MacFrugal’s discount chain expects to open a store in Hayward this October or November. Its location – the square footage has yet to be specified – will be in the Creekside Shopping Center at 20800 Mission Blvd.

It will follow Longs drug store, which closed on June 9. Longs operated for 33 years in that location.

Vista, Calif.-based Pan Pacific Retail Properties handled Longs’ lease and now is handling MacFrugal’s lease. A company source said that the area is ripe for a discount store and that the new MacFrugal’s will serve the needs of Hayward’s diverse population.

Pan Pacific has MacFrugal’s stores in six of its shopping centers, with all performing well, the source said.

MacFrugal’s is a part of the “closeout division” of Consolidated Stores. The division also includes Pic ‘N’ Save, Big Lots and Odd Lots and has more than 1,200 stores in 43 states.
