Rainforest CafŽ said it will no longer buildrestaurants in shopping malls, but plans to stick totourist destination locales. The disclosure was made in thesecond quarter earnings report issued by the Hopkins,MN-based restaurant chain, which operates 30units in the U.S. and licenses 12 foreign units.Same-store sales for the company’s mall units weredown 19.1 percent, while its “icon” units in touristareas were down 5.4 percent.

The company is taking a look at closing some of its under-performing mall units, and plans to close itsAventura Mall operation in Miami by the end of this month.The icon units include the chain’s restaurant atDisney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World inOrlando, as well as the one plans for DisneylandResorts in Anaheim, CA.
