The 33-member Greater Downtown Development Strategy Task Forcehas been meeting since May to draft a downtown revival plan. Theysay instead of subsidies, they will provide developers freer reignin the new downtown design while still seeking a satisfactory mixof office, retail and housing space.
In total, 2.4 million sf of office space is currently underconstruction in the area, with more on the way. About 483residential units are being built, with an additional 783 unitsproposed. An estimated 20,820 people live in San Jose's downtown.The San Jose Redevelopment Agency says there is 1.1 million sf ofretail space available in the area.
