SUNRISE, FL-American Classic Voyages of Chicago is considering moving its Chicago headquarters to this Fort Lauderdale suburb if state and local governments come up with enough dollar incentives to beat out competing locations in Atlanta and Los Angeles. Sunrise may give the company up to a $1.2 million cash grant as a sweetener.

The cruise line company says it is talking with an unidentified developer to erect a 250,000-sf building and create up to 725 new jobs. Although office rents here are attractive enough at an average $22.93 psf for class A space, American Classic is reported to be looking for up to $4.2 million in tax credits, job training funds and other incentives. The Broward Alliance is the lead local negotiator.

American Classic Voyages’ possible move to South Florida may relate to the company’s recent purchase of the United States Lines name and its expansions from inland and coastal cruises to ocean-going operations, industry sources speculate.
