COLES CORNER, WA-Longview Fibre will begin logging this week on a ridge above Lake Wenatchee that area property owners had hoped to buy at a discount and preserve as open space.

During a monthlong restriction on logging due to wildfire danger that has just been lifted, some area property owners tried to buy the 340-acre parcel, which sits atop Nason Ridge and overlooks the lake, a recreation destination on the eastern slopes of the Cascades.

Friends of Lake Wenatchee Forests offered to buy 340 acres for $1.3 million. Longview Fibre wanted $3.4 million for the land. No deal was reached.

The group says it is still talking with Longview Fibre officials about a possible land exchange that might prevent the logging. More likely, although still a long shot, is a proposal for property owners to buy development rights to the land from Longview Fibre after the logging is complete, thereby preventing plans for a housing development.
