SAN DIEGO-The San Pasqual Indian band has broken ground on a $25-million,40,000-sf casino near Valley Center in the northeastern part of the county.

The temporary casino will have 750 slot machines, 12 blackjack tables and abuffet. In the only partnership of its kind in California, the San Pasqualtribe is developing the project with financial backing by the Tunica-Biloxitribe in Louisiana.

The temporary casino is scheduled to open March 1 andoperate for about two years while the San Pasqual tribe builds the county’slargest new casino-resort. The permanent facility, valued at $180-million, will stand on a 200-acre parcel near Lake Wohlford.

The temporary casino, which will employ 400 workers, is being built about amile south of Valley Center Road. It stands about two miles north of the permanent resort’s site.

San Diego County, home to 12 tribes holding compacts with the state forgaming facilities, is expected to see more new Indian casinos than any otherCalifornia county. The Rincon, Pala, Jamul, Campo and Ewiiaapaayp bands haveall announced plans for new projects–all of them in the county’s northernand eastern regions.

In addition, the Barona, Sycuan and Viejas tribes already run casinos butare hoping to expand. Three others hold compacts but have not announced development plans.
