HOLYOKE, MA-In a significant boost for this struggling Western Massachusetts city, the Stop & Shop supermarket company has announced a $9-million redevelopment of its Lincoln Street retail plaza in Downtown Holyoke. The project will be anchored by construction of a 58,000-sf Stop & Shop superstore, and will also include the relocation of several existing retail uses into modern quarters.

“Stop & Shop is proud to be continuing our investment in the city of Holyoke,” says Karen Buckley, real estate development manager for the Quincy-based supermarket chain. She notes that the company is already constructing a new Stop & Shop on Northampton Street, one slated to open in December. That project is estimated at $6 million.

Holyoke Mayor Michael Sullivan predicts that the two supermarkets and new retail plaza will help revitalize the city, which has suffered from a lack of investment for most of the past decade. The two projects will collectively result in more than 200 construction jobs and 250 permanent positions.
