SALISBURY-With an initial investment of $18 million, Meredian Automotive Systems Inc. is buying an unfinished 255,000-sf building on 105 acres and plans to employ about 150 workers to supply the nearby Freightliner tractor plant.

Local officials believe the original investment will be followed by expansions at the site. The building, located on U.S. Highway 70 has been vacant for the past 10 years.

The company, which operates 30 plants in North and South America, owns an existing plant in the area. Meridian bought Cambridge Industries Inc. for $363 million last July. Cambridge operates a 62,000-sf auto components plant in Newton, about 50 miles northwest of Charlotte.
