ANTIOCH, CA-City council members in Antioch, Calif., have delayed development of a 9.1-acre commercial site because of concerns regarding some of the project’s details.

The project would lie within the existing Williamson Ranch Plaza at Lone Tree Way and Hillcrest. Its retail aspects, including a Staples store and 18,000 sf of retail space, were approved this week. But council members expressed concerns about planned office space, two restaurants and a day care center.

At issue is the possible intensity of night lighting, which concerns nearby neighbors. In addition, council members were concerned about the quality of the proposed restaurants, since Antioch has expressed a desire to bring more upscale eateries to town.

Sacramento-based Taylor Properties, which is in charge of the development, said that a Denny’s or Fresh Choice-style restaurant may be in the offing.

Council members also told the developer that they would prefer the proposed day care center be forgone in favor of much-needed office space. Companies are increasingly eyeing Antioch as a location for reasonably-priced space.

The project’s office-space component is due for more work and a later review, council members said this week.
