CHICAGO- The Chicago Housing Authority says its plan for next year concentrates on improving the lot of its senior citizen residents. The CHA plans on beginning renovations on 500 seniors units next year, with plans to have all 10,000 units renovated by 2003.

The CHA has long had plans for the demolition of high-density projects and plans to replace these projects with scattered, low-density developments throughout the city. Despite sometimes strong opposition, this goal continues to form the core of the CHA’s ambitious $1.5 billion, 10-year Plan for Transformation.

There are currently 73 empty high-rise projects and demolition is underway on 10 of these structures. The CHA estimates that as many as 2,600 of its 38,000 housing units will be torn down next year. The 2001 plan calls for work to begin on existing and new low-rise projects in the Wentworth, Bridgeport and Lowden neighborhoods on the South Side.

The CHA says it will pick development teams for several more new low rise projects next year.
