The CHA has long had plans for the demolition of high-densityprojects and plans to replace these projects with scattered,low-density developments throughout the city. Despite sometimesstrong opposition, this goal continues to form the core of theCHA's ambitious $1.5 billion, 10-year Plan for Transformation.

There are currently 73 empty high-rise projects and demolitionis underway on 10 of these structures. The CHA estimates that asmany as 2,600 of its 38,000 housing units will be torn down nextyear. The 2001 plan calls for work to begin on existing and newlow-rise projects in the Wentworth, Bridgeport and Lowdenneighborhoods on the South Side.

The CHA says it will pick development teams for several more newlow rise projects next year.
