This plan follows voters' rejection of a quarter-cent sales taxthatcalled for the construction of a new courthouse near theexisting annexat 308 W. Kansas St.

The contract was awarded to Jenkins & Associates of Merriam,Kan.Construction should begin this month and be completed in lessthan sixmonths, according to Susan Reese Duncan, the county managerofadministration.

Improvements to the courthouse will also include securityenhancementssuch as eliminating access through side doors and ametal detector atthe main entrance. The building will also be mademore accessible topersons with disabilities
