The land is adjacent Kaiser's existing 28-acre campus, whichholds buildings totaling 481,881 sf. The company has said it maysell the campus, but also has expressed interest in retaining theproperty as an income-producing investment.

The first phase of the project, a medical office building, isslated to break ground in early 2001 and open two years later, withhospital facilities opening in 2006. Kaiser will keep its existinghospital open during construction of the new building, tentativelyplanned to include 350 beds.

Kaiser's first area open-heart surgery program will be housed inthe new complex, the idea for which was born in early 1990s, whenKaiser first bought the land. Kaiser is also planning newconstruction in Vallejo and Redwood City.
