CHARLOTTE-Carnegie Town Center, a mixed-use development proposed for the SouthPark area by Texas-based Hines Co., is expected to have about 10% less office space than originally planned. Even with a reduction, city council members aren’t sure the proposed project is in the right place.

The planned project comprises offices, a hotel, 300 residences, stores and restaurants, with no buildings taller than 12 stories.

The long-debated SouthPark issue centers around a 50% expansion of the mall that would allow room for a Saks Fifth Avenue and about 25 other retailers. Only about 15 shops are allowed under current zoning.

In addition to voting on the Carnegie Town Center Oct. 18, the council will vote on the expansion of SouthPark mall and an addition to nearby Phillips Place, all of which have been endorsed by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission.
