OCEANSIDE, CA-A city councilman who was the lone opponent of a $200-million project to build a luxury resort Downtown says that a redesign of the plan now has his approval.

City Councilman Terry Johnson says he will vote for the proposed project by Manchester Resorts to build a 450-room hotel near the water’s edge. Another developer, Jim Watkins, plans to build timeshare condominiums next to the hotel.

Doug Manchester, principal for Manchester Resorts, and Watkins and Johnson met with reporters at City Hall Wednesday to announce the councilman’s change of heart. Previously, Johnson maintained that the project infringed on beachfront park space. The state Coastal Commission also expressed concerns about the plan.

But Manchester has since moved the project away from the beach, so it probably will not require Commission review. The city plans tohold a workshop sometime in the future to receive public comment on theplans.
