LUMBERTON, NC-Symbol Computer Inc., a 16-year-old Charlotte firm, has formed CoreVantage Technologies here primarily to bring high-tech jobs to Robeson County. Lumberton is about 135 miles southeast of Downtown Charlotte.

Symbol plans to buy the former 14,200-sf United States Postal Remote Encoding Center here and convert it into the Rural Southeastern North Carolina Technology Center.

The company expects to pay about $725,000 or roughly $51 per sf for the vacant building. The price is considered a bargain by Symbol founder/CEO Michael Cummings because the structure has existing fiber-optic lines and multiple computer connections.

Symbol anticipates closing on the building by year end. The company is considering renovating parts of the structure and expanding the space to 19,500 sf.

CoreVantage Technologies is scheduled to open in new headquarters here in January with a staff of 75 that will grow to 200 by the end of the third year, John Arciero, CoreVantage’s chief operating officer, tells GlobeSt.com. Salaries will range from $18,000 to $75,000.

Lumberton was chosen as a headquarters site for the new company because Symbol founder Cummings, is a Native American who grew up in Robeson County and wants to repay the community by helping bring high-tech jobs to that part of the state.
