WASHINGTON, DC-The Washington real estate market is still cooking because of the piping hot demand for telecommunications. TelePlace of Delray Beach, FL will open a data center in a former bakery at 175 R St. NE. The 125,000-sf building is part of the North of Massachusetts Avenue – or NOMA – corridor where Qwest, XM Satellite Radio, MCI and now Level 3 have chosen to locate their operations.

TelePlace was attracted to the area partly by the other companies in the area, which creates a usable infrastructure.

The company plans to spend $25 million to upgrade the 70-year-old facility, and expects to take eight months to complete the work. It plans to open about 100 data centers around the world by 2005.

Staubach Co. brokered the deal.
