EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ-The Mills Corp. of Arlington, VA, which builds big box shopping centers all over the country, wants to bring its brand name to Northern New Jersey in the form of the over two million-sf Meadowlands Mills. The big problem is that the site involved is sensitive wetlands that would need substantial remaking. Mills has offered five different plans to fill in up to 200 acres for development while restoring between 250 and 400 additional acres.

But the US EPA doesn’t like any of the plans and is recommending that the US Army Corps of Engineers deny a permit for the project. Joseph Seebode, who heads the Corps’ Regulatory Branch, meanwhile, is urging EPA to use its considerable clout to halt the project entirely and “stop wasting taxpayer dollars.”

The exchange came at the close of a three-month public comment period.
