SUNRISE, FL-The original plan by an H. Wayne Huizenga development group for a two-story, 1.5 million sf fashion mall alongside the 2.7 million-sf Sawgrass Mills is being opposed by Sawgrass owner Mills Corp. of Arlington, VA.

When the city changed the 150-acre site’s zoning from residential to commercial, Mills sued, but the case was thrown out of court.

However, the Huizenga group has since asked for several postponements of public hearings on its proposal, which includes 109,000 sf of hotel and office space. Rather than start the new project by 2004, as first announced, the developer is now reconsidering the highest and best use for the property.

Meanwhile, Mills Corp. plans to add another 550,000 sf to its complex. The decade-old Sawgrass Mills opened a dinning and entertainment wing last year.
