PHOENIX–The southeast Valley may be on the verge of getting its first Class-A office space.

A Phoenix developer, the Crow Group, has proposed building two, four- to six-story office buildings in the heart of downtown Mesa, the largest suburb of Phoenix. The site of the two buildings is southwest of Robson and Main streets in downtown.

Mesa has two other Class-A office projects under way: the Denali National Trust building southwest of the Superstition Freeway at Stapley Drive and the Opus West building near Fiesta Mall. The Crow Group building, however, would be the first to be built in the downtown area.

“For us, this is very important,” says Greg Marek, Mesa’s redevelopment director. “It means we’ll be able to attract high-quality tenants. There really isn’t any Class-A office space in the southeast Valley.”

In conjunction with the proposal, Marek has recommended the city create a redevelopment area in the block generally bounded by Robson, Main, Macdonald and First Avenue.

The new office building would be a big boost for downtown and could help retain the offices of the East Valley Tribune, one of the city’s largest employers. The current East Valley Tribune offices are within the proposed redevelopment area.
