COLUMBUS, GA-This city of 200,000 residents is looking for a few good men or women to develop a $10-million, 315-slip marina on the Chattahoochee River, about 200 miles south of Downtown Atlanta.

The site is at the 1,800-acre Oxbow Meadows, a former landfill-turned environmental-recreational-center, about 12 miles down-river from city center and adjacent to Fort Benning, US Military Reservation and home of the US Army Infantry School and Center.

Besides the 137-acre marina tract, another 30 upland acres are available for a retail, commercial or public-use project, says Steve Dockter, chief of transportation for Columbus and head of the marina project. The project also comprises a 200-unit dry stack storage facility, boat ramp, fishing pier and related marine services.

. The developer would lease the city land, finance, build and operate the facility. Bids are due in November. Construction could begin by next spring. The city assembled the land for the project over the last six years at a cost of $1.5 million, Dockter tells

A 1992 sale tax for city improvements included an allotment for the marina project. The nearest marina to Columbus, which is on the Chattahoochee River, is 30 miles south.

Oxbow Meadows, decades ago, was a mining site, then a city landfill. Columbus closed the landfill in the early 1970s.

In recent years, the city has cleaned up the land. It has built a nine-hole Audubon golf course in which sand traps and ponds are part of preserved wetlands, five miles of walking/biking trails that connect to Columbus’ Riverwalk, and the Columbus State University Environmental Learning Center.

About to go up on a site adjacent to Oxbow is a new $65 million relocation and expansion of the National Infantry Museum.
