The San Diego Planning Commission last week approved the$260-million, 1.4-million-sf Gateway of the Americas project, whichcould be under construction by the beginning of the year and opennext fall. The project still needs the approval of the citycouncil.
A local measure on next week's ballot will play a key role inthe project's future. The measure would give LandGrant an exemptionto the city's height regulations for retail buildings and allowconstruction of a pedestrian bridge to Tijuana.
Among the retail components of the project is a 650,000-sfshopping center with at least 100 stores. If the council approvesthe project, the city could kick in $20 million toward developmentover the next 30 years.
