DETROIT-Michigan’s brownfield redevelopment laws have been expanded to permit taxcredits for redevelopment of urban blighted buildings and high-techdevelopments, according to the Detroit Regional Chamber.Owners and operators of contaminated sites are not longer required to payfor cleanup actions unless they caused the contamination.

Flexible cleanup standards give developers the option of proposing asolution to historical contamination based on future use of the property.Michigan allows qualified businesses to claim a credit against SingleBusiness Tax liability equal to 10 percent of the investment made on abrownfield site. These credits, which can go to the lessee or the owner, canbe as much as $30 million.

In addition, projects in 88 urban core communities around the state mayreceive credits for functionally obsolete and blighted property, in additionto brownfield credits.
