PORTLAND-Home Depot envisions a retail, housing and office development on four acres at the Davis Business Center in the 4300 block of Northeast Halsey Street. Area property owners envision noise, traffic congestion, suffering small businesses and bad architecture.

Opponents showed up en masse at a recent public meeting to speak out against the project and show off some 2,200 signatures so far gathered in opposition to the project. Consultants for the project, without printed plans, say the project would be like no other Home Depot ever built. Company officials say they envision something on the order of the Zupan’s Market on Belmont Street, which sits at the base of a condominium development at the corner of 33rd Avenue Southeast.

Zoning on the property allows for the use. The company says it plans to meet with residents several more times before finalizing plans and submitting them to the city for approval. The look of the building would be dealt with next year during a review by the city’s design commission.
