Mission Valley already maintains a mining presence on thesoutheast side of Sunol, but activists say development near theirhistoric downtown could be environmentally hazardous. Local wineryElliston Vineyards has said it wants to lease much of the land forvineyards. But staff members at a Public Utilities Commissionhearing last month claimed the vineyards would not generate as muchrevenue for the town as the quarry, which is estimated to bring inmore than $1.5 million a year.
