RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC-Although the company has not released any hard figures for the project, the cost of the renovation is expected to run into the millions. According to IBM, the new lab is being designed to create a work environment that emphasizes collaboration and teamwork. Its new look will be that of an open office landscape featuring informal meeting areas and break and exercise facilities. Thousands of people work in the IBM software lab, which represents only about 10% of IBM’s presence in the Triangle.

According to the company, construction is expected to start in the second quarter of 2001 and take about three years to complete. The facility is right next door to the new 200,000-sf office and lab complex of Tivoli Systems, IBM’s new software subsidiary. The $34-million Tivoli office opened earlier this year.
