In the first awards, metro Atlanta's Gwinnett County, in thenortheast quadrant, and three cities within the county, BerkeleyLake, Sugar Hill and Suwanee, are four of the five recipients. BibbCounty in central Georgia, about 80 miles southeast of Atlanta, isthe fifth.

Applicants have until Nov. 30 to apply for this year's grants.Several applications were denied as deficient, but they may beresubmitted. Fulton County, in which most of Atlanta is located, isjoining with 10 of the cities to request $5.4 million. Barnes isexpected to request another $30 million from the Legislature whenit convenes in January.
