DETROIT-The Federal Highway Administration has awarded a $268,000 grant to the Woodward Avenue Heritage Management Team to implement a marketing strategy that will attract tourism and investment to the 28-mile corridor, which is home to more than 350 historic, cultural and scenic sites.

Members of the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, a planning partnership, believe the designation will brighten existing businesses and encourage new construction of quality developments.

Woodward Avenue, which runs from Detroit to Pontiac, was declared a Michigan Heritage Route in March 1999. The route program is a locally driven program administered by the Michigan Department of Transportation to identify, protect, enhance and promote unique scenic, historic and recreational qualities of state roads. The route designation can be used to stimulate and attract business.
