The building is part of Catellus' hallmark development - a $4billion project - that will include 5 million-sf of office space,more than 6,000 residential units and up to 70,000-sf of retailshops. In addition, the project will also include a 500-room hotel,parks and recreational amenities and the new life sciences researchcampus for the University of California at San Francisco.

For nearly two decades, Catellus has faced opposition to theproject from local community groups. But after donating land to theUniversity of California and adding thousands of affordable housingunits and 50 acres of open space, the company was able to breakground on Oct. 23 on the first apartment building.
