Talks with the company have been going on for about six months,according to Steve Nye, executive director of the Cleveland CountyEconomic Development Commission. The local government estimates thecity and county would recover the value of the incentives withinfive years through increased tax revenues from the project. Thedistribution company has agreed to be annexed into Shelby.

The company is also considering other sites, including some inthe Charlotte region, say people close to the project. CommScopeInc. is another firm that has its eye on Cleveland County. TheHickory, NC-based cable manufacturer plans to build a $30-million,350,000-sf plant near Shelby. The company is working on a deal tobuy 35 acres west of Kings Mountain, NC. CommScope also consideredland in Charlotte and Lincoln County.
