SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA-Active Ride Shop, a snowboard and skate retailer founded in 1989, has signed a lease for retail space in the 600,000-sf, $130 million-Gotcha Glacier sports facility to be built adjacent to Edison International Field of Anaheim, as part of the city’s Sportstown project.

Details of the lease were unavailable. However, with this lease, Active Ride Shop joins Sport Chalet, Bally’s Total Fitness and other retailers as tenants, bringing the total amount of retail space currently filled at the Glacier to 90%.

“Active Ride Shop is a critical piece as it caters to the core action-sports athletes,” says Brad Kinney, CEO of The Glacier of Anaheim LLC, which is based in San Juan Capistrano. The retailer currently has six Southern California locations, including a store in Irvine.

“Our company has grown quickly and we were looking to further expansion in Orange County,” says Shane Wallace, owner of Active Ride Shop. “When we saw the Glacier we were blown away by the concept. It’s exactly what our industry needs right now, and we’re excited to be a part of it.”

Michael Gerard, Glacier’s COO, says bringing in the right retailers is important to the overall concept because the kids are the facility’s target market and authenticity and credibility are essential to them.

“Active Ride Shop is a brand that our primary customers know and respect. Through this brand recognition and strong ties to the elite athletes, Active Ride Shop will play a critical role in our overall marketing efforts,” Gerard says.

Scheduled to open in 2001, the Glacier is the anchor tenant of the Sportstown development, an 805-acre region that also includes Edison Field and the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim. When completed, the Glacier will house indoor snowboard and skateboard parks, an ice rink, the largest rock climbing wall in North America and six surfing and body-boarding wave pools, along with retail establishments, restaurants, a children’s snow play area and interactive arcades.
