LA Mayor Richard Riordan, many businesses and some commercialreal estate landlords in the airport area have been pushing forexpansion, in part because they say it would boost business. Buthundreds of homeowners oppose expansion, saying it would create anunbearable amount of ground traffic, noise and air pollution.

Airport officials say the six-month comment period will likelybegin around Jan. 18, when they are expected to release theblueprint for their expansion plans. That means no decision will bemade until at least July, after Riordan leaves office and severalnew City Council members take office.

Some expansion opponents have said they'll vote against anycandidate who pledges to see the airport grow.
