INDEPENDENCE, MO-Ground work is underway in preparation for the second Costco Wholesale Corp. store to be built in the metropolitan area. The company has purchased 17 acres of land in the Eastland Town Center in Independence.

A spokesman for the Eastland Town Center developer, Eastland Center Associates, says that initial work should be completed in the next 60 days, with construction to follow. The store is scheduled to open next summer. Costco will open its first location in the Midtown Marketplace at Main Street and Linwood Blvd. Jan. 12.

Eastland Town Center, at the intersection of Interstate 70 and US Highway 40, is being built on 200 acres, which was formerly the Crackerneck Golf Course. Other tenants will include Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, Panera Bread, International House of Pancakes, Wendy’s and McDonald’s.
