Farmers Coop to Buy Quaker OatsPlant Judie Burkhalter Everest, KS - Plant in NW Missouri wasscheduled to close next year; some employees may move to new.company Everest, KS - Lifeline Foods, an entity of AgraMarke Inc. afarmer-owned, not-for-profit cooperative, has made a tentativeagreement to purchase the Quaker Oats plant in northwest Missouri.The plant is scheduled to close next year. Lifeline Foods, which isbased in Everest, KS, plans to mill flours made from corn, soybeansand wheat. Operations are expected to begin in June and the companywill employ about 110 people. Terms of the sale were notdisclosed.

The news is good for those in St. Joseph. When Quaker Oatsannounced last January that the plant would close next year, it wasanticipated that 600 people would lose their jobs. AgraMarke Inc.was formed three years ago and has about 350 members in threestates. The cooperative markets specialized grains raised bymembers. AgraMarke officials stated that they hoped to employ someof the Quaker Oats employees.
