Chandler is spending about $500,000 to study the feasibility ofbuilding a light-rail system that will connect to a larger systemnow underway in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. 'We're going to see if alight-rail system is feasible for our city," says ChandlerTransportation Planner Michael Normand.

"There are a number of efforts throughout other parts of theValley to build a high capacity transit system. Our concern is thatif we don't do it now, we'll be left behind," Normand adds.

With a completed study, Chandler can apply for federal funds topay for any system. Light-rail can cost up to $40 million a mile toput in place.
