PHOENIX-Another Phoenix suburb is looking into bringing a light-rail line into their borders.

Chandler is spending about $500,000 to study the feasibility of building a light-rail system that will connect to a larger system now underway in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. ‘We’re going to see if a light-rail system is feasible for our city,” says Chandler Transportation Planner Michael Normand.

“There are a number of efforts throughout other parts of the Valley to build a high capacity transit system. Our concern is that if we don’t do it now, we’ll be left behind,” Normand adds.

With a completed study, Chandler can apply for federal funds to pay for any system. Light-rail can cost up to $40 million a mile to put in place.

The first section of a light-rail system that is expected to eventually run through Phoenix, into Tempe and on to Mesa is already under way. It’s expected to be operational by 2006.
