KANSAS CITY, MO. – There is a lot of movement in renovated Science City at UnionStation, near Crown Center. Workers are preparing new offices for UnionStation administrators on the lower level of the facility near theentrance by the West Yards parking lot. Administrators will be movingfrom their third and four offices in the southeast corner of thebuilding to make way for new tenants.

Mix Inc., a division of Hallmark Cards Inc., plans to move into theadministrators former office space. Mix operates Ebizmix, an onlinebusiness to business service to individual specialty retailers.Hallmark’s internet division, Hallmark.com, is already housed in UnionStation. Hallmark’s corporate headquarters is less than a quarter mileaway, on the opposite end of Crown Center.

“We are always evaluating ways to being more revenue into UnionStation,” says Laura Davis, public relations coordinator.Union Station managers had intended to ask the Missouri Finance Boardfor $500,000 in tax credits to help pay for the officerenovations. Officials were looking to raise a million dollars inprivate donations to help pay for the work. It is estimated that therenovation will cost $1.3 million. Hallmark signed a lease for 29,000square feet at a cost of $600,000 per year.

The Missouri Development Finance Board did not consider the tax creditrequest, but construction is continuing anyway. The cost for therenovation will likely be put into a long-term master plan that will besubmitted next year. Union Station officials are also considering askingfor tax credits for other projects, including renovating other nearbybuildings and constructing a child care facility within the station.

Also to change at the station in the next year is the construction of apedestrian bridge from Union Station to the adjoining Freight Housedistrict, the construction of the Henry Block memorial fountain and therelocation of Amtrak offices and terminal to inside the station.
