Fund-raising for the project began only eight months ago and wasexpected to take several more years. Insiders say the credit goesto former Spartan head football coach John Ralston, who is friendswith Ted Taube, president of the Koret Foundation and the formerowner of the Ralston-coached Oakland Invaders of the defunct UnitedStates Football League.

Currently, student athletes use a 2,800-sf weight room in theAlan B. Simpkins Building on the north side of Spartan Stadium, theshower facilities for which are reserved only for the school'sfootball team. Women and men involved in other sports must dressand shower elsewhere after workouts. The new facility will haveenough locker space for all of the university's 350 male and femaleathletes, and will feature state-of-the-art equipment and arehabilitation center.
