HOUSTON-Postal employees in January 2001 will move back into their larger, totally refurbished “store concept” Debra Sue Schatz Post Office in the 34,000-sf building at 2909 Rogerdale in the Westchase area of Houston.

The new post office is about double the size it was and has added 40 parking space for patrons. But the biggest change awaiting postal customers and employees alike is the “store concept” layout.

There’s no more standing in line to get to the counter to see the clerk. Instead, the post office will function much like a retail store, with customers selecting stamps, boxes, packing materials and such before going to “checkout” to pay for purchases. Patrons seeking mail service only will have direct counter access, as in the past.

The post office has been operating out of temporary quarters at Westheimer and Beltway for the past two and a half years, while the Rogerdale site had been under construction. The modern facility will house 23 clerks and 64 carriers capable of handling over 21,000 pieces of mail daily. The post office is dedicated to Debra Sue Schatz, who had been killed while delivering the mail 15 years ago. It serves the upscale Westchase District , between Gessner on the east, Haynes on the west, Westpark on the south and Buffalo Bayou on the north.
