AUSTIN-Valence Technology Inc., a maker of rechargeable batteries for electronic devices, is shifting a significant part of its operations to Austin in its first US move outside its Henderson, NV base.

Coming to Austin will be marketing, operations, systems engineering and finance functions. Henderson gets to keep research and development.

Valence, whose new CEO is a former Dell Computer Corp. executive, has not chosen office space in Austin, but wants to be up and running by Aug. 1, Stephanie Willerton, a company contact, tells GlobeSt.com. “We’re still looking,” she says. She was unable to say how much space Valence is seeking nor whom it is working with in the search.

The company plans to hire in Austin, although some workers probably will move from Henderson, Willerton says. Valence has about 80 employees in Henderson and 215 at its Northern Ireland manufacturing facility.

Valence is coming to Austin because of its strong talent pool in Austin and because the new CEO is familiar with the city. Stephan Godevais, who led Dell’s desktop and notebook product lines for consumers and small businesses, was named Valence’s CEO and president May 15. He replaced founder Lev Dawson, who is staying on as board chairman. Valence develops and sells lithium-ion polymer batteries, which power laptops, cell phones, PDAs and other devices.
