Water rights are bought and sold much like real estate in manyparts of the country.

"Ownership of Water Rights" reports and water rights titleinsurance provide security similar to what a title search and titleinsurance provide for a property sale.

"With increased population and business in these dry Westernstates, many streams and rivers have been over appropriated, so noone else can take water from these sources," says Joe Knox, StewartWater Information president. "In most circumstances, anyone whowants to build on the land must buy water rights from an existingowner or another party."
