SAN DIEGO-The San Pasqual Indian band may scale back plans for its planned $230-million resort in North San Diego County. Economic uncertainties have prompted the reevaluation of the project, the second-largest of several new casinos in the county. Tribal officials say they might consider building a smaller project or build the current plan in phases.

The tribe announced the project in April 2000, prompted by passage of an Native American gaming-ballot initiative. The resort-casino was slated for completion in late 2002 and set to include 2,000 slot machines, 70 card tables, seven restaurants and a 250-room hotel.

The 285-acre site overlooks Lake Wohlford near Valley Center. The resort was also to include a winery, a golf course, horse trails and a campground. The estimated cost started a $180 million and later ballooned to $230 million. The tribe opened a $40-million interim casino six months ago.
