WALNUT CREEK, CA-A proposal that aims to add a dozen mobile vendor carts to the Broadway Plaza shopping center is being critically viewed by the Walnut Creek city council.

The Broadway Plaza is a 686,000-sf shopping center in the heart of downtown Walnut Creek, known for its upscale image and intricate design. Owned by the Macerich Co., the shopping center has 91 shops, services and restaurants, including Macy’s, Nordstrom and Banana Republic. The plaza has received many awards for its 25.4-acre property’s design and landscape.

The retail carts, which would sell items such as clothing and fine jewelry, will be designed with a metal frame and wood cabinets in an effort to complement the plaza’s appearance. Still, the city’s planning staff and Design Review Commission are afraid that the carts may be an eyesore.

The Macerich Co. proposed the addition of the carts several years ago and only now is the project up for review. The owners say new merchandise will be beneficial to the plaza.

The city has recommended that the carts be placed on Broadway Lane, a pedestrian-only area in Broadway Plaza, and have recommended starting with six carts instead of twelve. If the proposal is accepted, the city would have to approve amending the zoning code in the area, as outdoor sales are restricted at the plaza. If approved, the carts could be set up by next summer.
