The Broadway Plaza is a 686,000-sf shopping center in the heartof downtown Walnut Creek, known for its upscale image and intricatedesign. Owned by the Macerich Co., the shopping center has 91shops, services and restaurants, including Macy's, Nordstrom andBanana Republic. The plaza has received many awards for its25.4-acre property's design and landscape.

The retail carts, which would sell items such as clothing andfine jewelry, will be designed with a metal frame and wood cabinetsin an effort to complement the plaza's appearance. Still, thecity's planning staff and Design Review Commission are afraid thatthe carts may be an eyesore.

The Macerich Co. proposed the addition of the carts severalyears ago and only now is the project up for review. The owners saynew merchandise will be beneficial to the plaza.
