SANTEE, CA-Vestar Development has closed escrow on 50 acres destined to become Trolley Square, the city’s largest retail project.

Grading began yesterday on the property at Mission Gorge Road and Cuyamaca Street, where the Target-anchored center is scheduled to open in October. The project will include 440,000 sf of retail, and Vestar officials say they have commitments from Party City, T.J. Maxx, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Pier 1 Imports and Old Navy.

The center also includes a landscaped promenade, water fountains, and a 250-seat amphitheater.

Vestar is the latest of several developers to try and move forward on the project since the mid-1980s, when it was first proposed. After hoping for a theater-based entertainment haven, the city in August approved Vestar’s proposal to have Target as the anchor.
