Grading began yesterday on the property at Mission Gorge Roadand Cuyamaca Street, where the Target-anchored center is scheduledto open in October. The project will include 440,000 sf of retail,and Vestar officials say they have commitments from Party City,T.J. Maxx, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Pier 1 Imports and Old Navy.

The center also includes a landscaped promenade, waterfountains, and a 250-seat amphitheater.

Vestar is the latest of several developers to try and moveforward on the project since the mid-1980s, when it was firstproposed. After hoping for a theater-based entertainment haven, thecity in August approved Vestar's proposal to have Target as theanchor.
