ALAMEDA, CA-The California Public Library Construction and Renovation Board has awarded more than $40 million to 13 library construction projects in the Bay Area.

The city of Alameda’s Main Library was awarded $15.5 million for construction of a 47,500-sf facility in the Downtown core. Construction of the library, expected to cost $24 million, is expected to begin in March 2004.

The city of Hercules will use a grant of $6.2 million to build a new 20,500-sf library. Construction on the $10.2 million facility is slated to begin in February 2004.

The San Mateo Main Library will receive $20 million to pay for the construction of a facility that will more than double the size of the current 43,000-sf library, which was built in 1968. Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2004. The entire project is expected to cost $61 million.

The grants were made pursuant to the Library Bond Act of 2000, which was created by the passage of Proposition 14, a statewide bond measure approved by the voters in March 2000. The act authorized the sale of $350 million of general obligation bonds for the purpose of public library construction and renovation.
