SEATTLE-Help is on its way for the area homeless population thanks to a $14.7 million federal grant. Seattle and King County have received funds via the federal McKinney Homeless Assistance program to renew 57 programs, the Safe Harbors Homeless Management Information System and the funding of three new projects.

“We are very grateful for the continued support of the federal government for our regional programs assisting homeless individuals and families,” says King County Executive Ron Sims. “This award will allow us to continue to provide critically needed services and supports that will help us to reduce poverty and homelessness in our local communities.”

The McKinney funds will also create a new permanent housing project for homeless persons with disabilities and one new transitional housing project. The new permanent housing project, Shelter Plus Care, will provide an additional 12 units of supportive housing in the region. Pine City Inn will provide 41 new units of transitional housing.

The majority of the award will sustain existing programs, with approximately $14 million supporting the ongoing operations of 58 programs. These programs provide 646 units of transitional housing, 465 units of permanent housing for homeless people with disabilities, 2 Safe Haven projects, a variety of supportive services programs, and the Safe Harbors Homeless Management Information System.

In addition, the two new projects totaling $714,600 will add 12 new permanent housing units for homeless persons with disabilities, and 41 transitional housing units.
